Amazon.com

Ronin
Ronin is the chisel-faced, battle-hardened leader of the Leafmen, the elite corps of warriors sworn to protect all life in the forest. He lives by the creed: “many leaves, one tree” and wouldn’t think twice about putting his own life on the line for someone he cares about. When the forest and his beloved Queen come under siege, Ronin rallies the Leafmen into action with his bravery and wry humor.

Bomba
A quirky, absent-minded professor, Bomba has grown out of touch with his now teenage daughter, MK. He lives in the middle of the forest, in a rundown house, where he surrounds himself with bizarre homemade gadgets. His life has been dedicated to – some would say obsessed with – studying –a civilization of tiny people he’s never seen. But when MK disappears, Bomba must put his own dreams under the microscope, and find what he’s really always been looking for.

Nod
Rakish and handsome, Nod is all about bucking the rules and flying solo. But his brazen individualism doesn't square with the Leafmen’s ideals of teamwork and unity, so he quits the squad. After a teenage girl enters his world – and when the stakes are high – Nod discovers what it takes to be a true hero.

Mary Katherine (MK)
Mary Katherine (she prefers “MK”) is a smart, spirited and headstrong 17-year-old who finds herself on the journey of a lifetime. After returning to her childhood home to connect with her estranged father, MK loses patience with his endless stories of the “tiny people” who live in the woods. But when she is magically transported into the Leafmen’s world, she gains a new perspective. To find her way home, MK must do more than believe in this world; she’ll have to help save it.

Mub & Grub
Low on the evolutionary food chain, but high in self-esteem, Mub, a self-characterized “ladies’ man,” and Grub, a wannabe Leafman, are the caretakers of the royal pod that will bloom into the future Queen or King of the forest. Though this slug-and-snail comedy duo is spineless, literally, they show real backbone by joining the quest to save their world.

Nim Galuu
At first glance, Nim Galuu is the consummate party animal. But don’t let this larger than life caterpillar fool you – his wisdom and practical know-how make him a key behind-the-scenes player in the epic battle to save the forest.

Queen Tara
Beautiful, agile and strong, Tara isn’t just the Leafmen’s Queen; she’s the life force of the forest, which she presides over with respect, compassion and humor. When Tara finds herself in danger, her unique connection with nature gives her powerful allies. And when all hope seems lost, she summons help from the most surprising of places.

Bufo
A tough-guy toad, Bufo is a wheeler and dealer who plays all the angles: he profits no matter which side wins or loses.

Mandrake
Gifted, or cursed, with the ability to bring destruction to anything he touches, Mandrake and his Boggan minions are the arch-nemeses of the Leafmen. Mandrake is tired of hiding in the shadows, and with his son by his side, he plans the ultimate revenge – to claim the forest he believes should have always been his.

Epic is a computer-animated adventure fantasy filled with gorgeous scenery, nice animated effects, plenty of action, and a somewhat familiar plot about the existence of a society of tiny people. Mary Katherine (Amanda Seyfried), or M.K. as she likes to be called, has recently come to live with her dad Bomba (Jason Sudeikis) in a ramshackle house in the middle of nowhere. Obsessed with proving the existence of a society of tiny guardians of the forest called Leafmen, who are responsible for maintaining balance by keeping the Boggans from spreading blight throughout the forest, M.K.'s dad has little time for a daughter or the realities of everyday life. A chance event lands M.K. right in the middle of the Leafmen's society, where she quickly develops a whole new appreciation for her father's eccentricities. She finds herself charged by the Leafmen's queen (Beyoncé Knowles) with a difficult task that will mean the difference between preservation and destruction for the forest. M.K. joins forces with an assortment of unlikely heroes, including slug and snail duo Mub and Grub (Aziz Ansari and Chris O'Dowd), overzealous Leafmen commander General Ronin (Colin Farrell), and Nod (Josh Hutcherson), a soldier with a bad habit of questioning authority. Their perilous journey introduces M.K. to a strange new breed of enemy and a whole new way of thinking. Loosely based on William Joyce's book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs, the film shares its premise--a society of tiny people tries to thrive without drawing the attention of the larger humans--with films like the Tinker Bell movies and The Secret World of Arrietty. What's unique about Epic is that it's just as much action film as fantasy. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

A really cute storyline about a Scientist who believes there’s a whole world of tiny insect sized people living in the forest. His teenage daughter comes to visit after her mother’s passing and gets sucked into this tiny world and the battle of good verses evil.

We missed "Epic" at the theaters. But, we received the 3D BluRay yesterday on my Wife's birthday. Five adults hovering in front of the Sharp 70" Quatra, in the darkened room, with sunglasses. Quite a sight. BUT, more importantly ages 29 to 64 and we all enjoyed "Epic".

I tend to not over think the individual flaws of a film, but how it stands as an ensemble. Sometimes we don't agree with the logic of the story, but in the end, is the important issue is, was the story well told over all. Epic qualifies for "Story Well Told".

"Epic's" RIO genealogy shows though in the most positive ways. Beautiful to watch. Good vs. Evil, etc., and yes Good prevails. I'm certain all of my grandchildren will love it and their parents will approve.

As other have said, the animation is breathtakingly beautiful with amazing attention to detail. The 3D is NOT "in your face" but just enough to gain that extra degree of "being there". It was very tasteful. This is artful animation, not the CG live-action of Avatar. The 3D was just right for me, and the family agreed. The use of foreground vs back ground carried though even into the credits. KUDOs for being true to the 3D art form. This is a film you can forget it's in 3D until you turn the 3D off. Then you know it's missing. Just right...

We'll watch it over and over as each batch of kids and grownups circles through the house to watch in 3D or 2D as the groups prefer.

It will undoubtedly become a "standard" as sure as RIO, Ice Age, Robots, and other BlueSky animated films have. That reminds me, time to watch Robots again!

Thanks BluSky for thinking just enough out of the box.

My primary criticisms: "What's up with the title"? No wonder people didn't flock to see it. Too bad. Don't let the title put you off. The film could have just as easily be title" "Wonderful" or "Enchanting", which it was for us. My secondary criticism is the extra features are only on the 2D disk in the set. Surely the 3D didn't take up that much extra data on the disk, or maybe it did with the exceptional detail. Furthermore, this is a very complex project and I think there were many opportunities missed in the Extra features. They weren't the Extras you'll tell your friends about, etc.. like those found on Shrek and some other animated films. Oh wait!. Maybe I just figured out why they didn't bother to include them on the 3D disk.

Balance your life. Watch "Epic" with friends and family, then go out and enjoy the outdoors the Leafmen are protecting.

Once upon a time, in a land VERY FAR, FAR AWAY, storytellers gifted with superb imaginations and no small amount of virtue made visual entertainments you could watch without "cringe". This is one such offering, and it is truly magical. "Hiss the villains, cheer the champions, laugh at the well intentioned "big feet" [SOOO SLOOOW"] and then share the sheer joy of film-making with others. Unreservedly recommended.

I thought the quality of the animation and the story line were very good. In many ways it was a typical story of being miniaturized into the natural world and learning life lessons--the kind of story that has been around since before my generation. But,being a fan of Tolkien, etc. I found the whole idea fascinating.
However, I don't really appreciate having to buy three disks when I only need one. I don't play movies on my computer much since I don't travel much with a computer. There is no movie that I must see whenever I'm on the road. It can wait until I get back home. I wish that companies would stop assuming that everyone does and wants the same thing. I am forced to pay a higher price than should be necessary. For that reason I normally wait until the film is on pay-per-view on TV or is offered on Netflix. (My wife is the movie nut that has to have a collection of movies to watch over and over)

little leaf men flying around in the forest, what's not to love
  • Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2024
How had I never seen this movie before?! It's perfectly adorable. If you ever saw The Littles on TV, this is similar. A race of tiny people life among us. Except these are forest fae, bugs and plant-like. The story as much exciting and sweet, as it is heartfelt. And so well done! The animation, the movements of the warrior leaf men, and the archers is exquisite. I picked this up because of the book I just read. So if you like the vibe of this movie, I recommend you read Gladefolk by HM Skinner. It's right here on Kindle.

My husband and I don't have children, but we both enjoy animated movies. We had NEVER heard of this one, and didn't see any previews beforehand. I enjoyed a lot of aspects of this movie, it reminds me of a lot of my favorite movies. Here is a basic rundown of the plot, I will try not to spoil it...:

A teenage girl loses her mother and must go live with her obsessive, disgraced scientist, father; who believes there are tiny people living in the forest. Meawhile, in the forest, there is a battle being waged between the Boggins and the Queen, who is the life force of all things. The Queen is defended by the Leaf Men, hummingbird riding "Samurai" soldiers. The paths of the girl and the Queen entangle during an important forest event that will determine the future of its existence.

    This movie felt like
    50% Fern Gulley
25% Honey I Shrunk The Kids
    25% Fifth Element

...with a dash of a few other movie flavors thrown in.

The only thing I didn't like was the use of the crows and the bats as evil characters. The Boggins represent disease or virus, things that infect and destroy the ecosystem. Bats and crows are both species that help to keep disease in check. Bats control insect population and other species of bats are integral to pollination. Crows are the garbage disposals, and help to clean disease carrying carion from the environment. Aside from that, it was a fun movie that will likely get watched many times.
